Choosing a Fan for the Office

Summer is here and the office is starting to warm up, now is the time to consider buying a fan for home or the office to help keep you cool. Fans come in many types and sizes, from ceiling fans, wall mounted fans, small lightweight, tower fans or pedestal/stand fans.

The small lightweight desk fans are mostly designed for personnel cooling and are perfect for home use or in a small office environment. This type of fan is normally portable and light weight and allows you take it with you when you move rooms. These fans operate on a low voltage and therefore do not use a lot of energy.

Office Fans

Tower fans can be desk or floor standing, the more expensive models can offer a number of features such as remote control, timing functions, breeze modes and even ionizers. One of the benefits of a tower fans is that they take up less space and are often more attractive, this makes them more suitable for the home environment.

For a larger space a stand or pedestal fan could be suitable. These have adjustable stands and can be raised to enable the airflow to be blown over a greater area.

Before buying a fan consider the features on offer and choose the one that suits your needs the best.

Fixed or oscillating is a feature with most fans, This allows you to keep the airflow fixed in one direction if only you are using the fan, or if there is someone else close by the oscillating feature allows the fan to rotate creating airflow in multiple directions.

Speed setting allows you to adjust the blade speed, thus increasing or decreasing the airflow. Remember in a working environment with lots of paper on a desk this could be a problem.

The blade diameter determines the airflow, the bigger the blade the more airflow created. To maximise the airflow choose a larger blade diameter.

Safety should always come first when choosing your fan, ensure that the fan has non-slip feet to keep it in place. Even when working at full speed the fan should remain stable at all time. Ensure your fan is situated where people will not bump into it or trip on cables.
