Category Guide

A laser printer has two main consumable items that need replacing at varying intervals during the printer lifespan, the toner cartridge and the drum cartridge. The drum cartridge is the component that receives the image from the laser and transfers it to the paper.

How it Works

The drum receives an electrostatic charge, when the light created by the laser touches it this charge is removed. Laser printer drums work on a negative charge principle. Areas of the drum with no electrostatic charge attract toner particles. The toner particles adhere to the drum surface and are then transferred to the paper as it passes very close by. The paper also receives an electrostatic charge which means the toner is transferred to the exact position of the final printed image. Lastly a cleaning blade wipes any excess toner particles from the surface of the printer drum.
