Buyers Guide

Large format printers are generally considered to be any printer that uses a paper roll measuring between 18 and 100 inches. Anything larger than this is called a Super Wide or Grand format. They are suitable for many applications including banners and posters, murals, wallpaper and vehicle graphics as well as architectural drawings and construction maps. Typically large format printers use inkjet printing technology or a variation of it as it is far more cost effective than other printing methods and offers a wide and flexible choice of colour options.

HP Large Format Printers

HP created the first large format printer, the pen plotter, back in the late 1970’s and are still the market leaders today thanks to their focus on innovation. Their Designjet range is perhaps the best known they produce and these are suitable for single or multi user environments. They can be used for a wide range of jobs from CAD drawings to full colour presentations. They also have some great tools to help efficiency such as automatic print roll alignment and print previews.

What to look for when purchasing large format paper……

Width - The size of roll you select is obviously dictated by the size of printer you have. The width of each paper roll is shown in the product descriptions and also in the specifications.

Length - HP paper rolls vary in length from 30.5 meters to 91 meters. Again these dimensions are clearly shown in the product information.

Paper Coating - Standard papers, which are ideal for black and white line drawings and colour prints, have a special coating that means the ink dries on the paper almost instantly. Also look for coated papers which provide superior image quality and are therefore ideal for graphic and architectural drawings.

Weight - As with all paper products paper weight is measured by grammes per square meter or ‘GSM’. Entry level paper starts at 80gsm, which is the same as standard office copier paper. Standard weight papers are 90gsm to 100gsm and heavyweight papers start at 120gsm rising to 190gsm.
